Organizational Information: In the late 1980s, Oglethorpe Power Company took the partially completed Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Plant near Rome, Georgia over from the Georgia Power Company. Oglethorpe Power Company completed the project in the mid-1990s and serves as plant operator today. Georgia Power maintains a minority interest in the facility.
The Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Plant is a pumped-storage electricity generating plant. The plant provides the electricity needs for households in some areas of northwest Georgia. During peak hours, water stored in a 220 acre reservoir is released into another 600 acre lower reservoir. The water from the upper reservoir is released through a 570 foot shaft and a 1,935 foot tunnel via turbines. At night the water is pumped back to the upper reservoir using excess power generated at coal and nuclear power plants.
Prior to the power plant's construction, Georgia Power hired TRC Garrow Associates, a private environmental consulting firm, to conduct the necessary environmental studies of the surrounding lands required by the U.S. Federal Government. TRC Garrow Associates are required by federal law to supply surrounding libraries and research facilities copies of these reports and studies.
Description: This collection contains official copies of archaeological and architectural documentation compiled for the Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Project in Floyd County, Georgia. Copies of this documentation have been produced and the following materials are enclosed: the historic structures report for historic resources (including photographs and indices to photographs); the architectural study for historic resources (including photographs and indices to photographs); the floor plan, photographs, index to photographs, and location of photographs for the Cordle Store; and the project's technical synthesis report. The collection contains 48 photographs (with indices) and 67 drawings.
