Berry College continues to increase its investment in developing a first class technology environment. Today the college has a modern, state-of-the-art computing and networking infrastructure supporting students, faculty and staff. There continues to be many aggressive initiatives underway to improve it even more.

Currently, for instance:

  • All resident hall rooms have free, high-speed, 100 Mbps, Ethernet connection for each student (a one-to-one "port per pillow" ratio; eliminating the need for modems).
  • Remote dial-in service is provided for students residing off-campus as well as for faculty and staff wanting remote access to campus computing facilities.
  • Each resident room has one phone line per two students.  Students are responsible for bringing their own analog telephone with them or they can buy one locally when they arrive.  These phone lines are equipped with free local calling.  Berry does not offer long distance resale since most students use their cell phones and/or calling cards.  There is an Atlanta line service that is available for students through the Telecom office that allows unlimited access to Atlanta based calls for $10.00 per month.
  • Every resident hall room has its own connection to the college 78 digital channel cable TV system. Students may upgrade for additional offerings.
  • A Gigabit (one billion bits per second) fiber optic backbone network extends throughout the campus interconnecting all major buildings plus interconnecting the main and mountain campuses.
  • All students are assigned their own computer account which includes free e-mail and unlimited Internet access privileges.
  • The college has 40 Mbps student access to the Internet and 21Mbps for faculty and staff.
  • Faculty members are increasingly using the Berry Web system and electronic facilities to supplement regular classroom instruction, as well as student/teacher interaction and "virtual" contact time.
  • There are five student computer labs located in the main academic buildings: Science Building, Green, Laughlin, Memorial Library and Cook Halls with a total of 144 modern workstations and printers.
  • A "one card" ID debit system is used on campus that enables students and employees to charge against their account for meals, items at the bookstore and laundry machines.
  • 48 modern multimedia classrooms have been installed over the last several years. These rooms all provide digital projector, VCR, DVD, internet, and cable TV access.
  • Deployed 802.11 A, B and G wireless in all primary academic buildings plus Memorial Library, Krannert Center and Hermann Hall.  Several areas outdoors are also covered.  Anyone on campus can access our "open" wireless at any time which will get them to the internet.  Wireless is being considered for the residence halls and we hope to have that implemented soon.
