Jeanne Tiehen

Dr. Tiehen’s research includes science plays, phenomenology, time, performance theory, climate change, disability and illness, monsters and comparative play analysis. Her book, The Theatre of Nuclear Science: Weapons, Power, and the Scientists Behind it All, was published by Routledge in 2021, and she is currently working on her second book, The Monsters We Become: Performing Monsters on Stage, Screen, and Beyond. She has presented at several conferences, including the International Federation for Theatre Research, American Society for Theatre Research, Association for Theatre in Higher Education, and more. Her published work has been included in Theatre Topics, Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Theatre Survey, Performing Ethos, and Performance Philosophy. Her M.A. thesis “Frankenstein on Stage: Galvanizing the Myth and Evolving the Creature” was awarded the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Outstanding Thesis Award in 2013 at the University of Kansas.

As a practitioner, Dr. Tiehen has performed in many plays and musicals, she loves to direct a variety of theatrical works, and she utilizes her training in Stanislavski and Michael Chekhov technique in the classroom and rehearsal studio. She also likes to write and devise plays, and she had her original play Anniversary produced at the Otherworld Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois and had her play Unsaid shortlisted for the Alpine Theatre Prize Fellowship in 2024.

Prior to Berry College, she was a lecturer and assistant professor under Ireland’s hosting researcher agreement at University College Dublin and previously taught at Susquehanna University and Wayne State College. Over the years, she has taught a variety of classes, including multiple Acting courses, Directing, Dramatic Literature, Global Theatre, American Theatre, African American Theatre History, Theatre and Activism, Adaptations, and Digital Theatre. She has also advised multiple students and supervised undergraduate and graduate projects and theses
