Spanish Honor Society: Sigma Delta Pi

What We Do

Membership in Sigma Delta Pi not only bolsters credentials but also offers leadership opportunities.  The Berry College chapter, Omicron Sigma, is active with a wide variety of activities including two induction ceremonies each year, volunteer work with a number of organizations, movie nights, conversation nights, fundraising activities, Spanish theater, tutoring, and more.  Each year the chapter elects a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and SGA representative.  The officers work closely with the faculty advisor to organize activities for the year.  To apply for membership, students must be of sophomore standing, be enrolled in or have already taken a 300 or higher level Spanish course, and hold a Spanish GPA of 3.0 or greater.

History

The Spanish Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi, was founded at the University of California, Berkeley in 1919.  It is the only honor society devoted exclusively to students of Spanish and currently the society has over 170,000 members.  It offers a number of undergraduate study abroad awards ( Sigma Delta Pi Study Abroad Awards), various achievement awards, and research grants for graduate students ( Sigma Delta Pi Research Grants).  The society’s official colors are red and gold, and its flower is the red carnation.
