Berry and the DAR

The DAR has been a treasured friend to Berry and its students for more than a century, giving hardworking young people without means a chance to get an education. As our valued partner, the DAR provides critical support as we take founder and Georgia Daughter Martha Berry’s education of the head, heart and hands into the 21st Century. We at Berry are grateful for the Daughters’ enduring friendship and proud of our heritage as the first DAR school and only DAR-approved college.

Kindred Spirits

Berry was founded in 1902 as a school for enterprising rural boys at a time when few public schools existed in Georgia. Soon after the school opened, Miss Berry realized she would need help to keep the school in operation, and she knew just who to turn to – a group of ladies who were equally dedicated to the pursuit of education, the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Miss Berry spoke to members at the DAR Continental Congress in 1904 to request their assistance in making education available to the needy mountain children of Northwest Georgia. 

With support from many friends, including individual daughters, chapters, state societies and the national society, Martha Berry was able to add a girls' school in 1909, a junior college in 1926, and a four-year college in 1930. Graduate programs were added in 1972.

Berry Today

Although more than a century has passed since our founding, Berry remains true to its mission to produce good citizens with a strong academic foundation, sure moral compass, passion for service and well-honed work ethic. Now one of the South’s top liberal arts colleges, Berry offers exceptional undergraduate degree programs in the sciences, nursing, humanities, arts and social sciences, as well as undergraduate and master’s level opportunities in business and teacher education.

Berry’s approximately 2,014 undergraduate and graduate students represent 36 states and 13 foreign countries. Almost all Berry students receive some form of financial aid, and around 90 percent choose to work on campus, the highest such percentage for any college offering work as a voluntary opportunity.
