The Berry College Moon Gallery presents “Meditation in Space Time: Art Textiles” by Junco Sato Pollack

Release Date: January 08, 2019

The Berry College Moon Gallery presents “Meditation in Space Time: Art Textiles” by Junco Sato Pollack, running through Jan. 31.

The Moon Gallery will be transformed into a serenely meditative space, creating an environment that will invite visitors to slow down and walk through the works, being momentarily removed from the frantic and mundane worries, uncertainties, and activities of daily life. “Meditation in Space Time: Art Textiles” is comprised of textiles from a series started in 2006 and is on-going and informed by Eastern spiritual philosophies. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to pin sewn pieces of fabric to the wall that will help construct a community mandala that will be developed throughout the duration of the show.

Pollack has been deeply invested in the creation of textiles for over 30 years. Her practice is integrated with all aspects of her everyday life that includes the recitation of scriptures, meditation, gardening, yoga and breathing exercises. These activities are informed by her studies of Zen and Tantric Buddhism in addition to other Eastern philosophies combined with Christianity and New England Transcendentalist traditions. Her textile work links ancient methods, like the creation of kudzu fibers, with the latest advances in digital and chemical technologies but often within prescribed forms such as mandalas and scrolls.

The recipient of numerous, awards and commissions, her work is widely collected and exhibited, most recently at the Swan Coach House Gallery in Atlanta. A native of Japan, Pollack is an associate professor emerita at Georgia State University in Atlanta where she taught textiles from 1992-2012. She has a B.A. in English linguistics and literature from Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo and studied textiles at the Seian Women’s University in Kyoto, the Kyoto Fiber Polytechnic University, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Her M.F.A is in textile design from the Rochester Institute of Technology in upstate New York.

The Moon Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The artist will give a talk on Jan. 27 at 5 p.m.
