Small Group Training

The Department of Recreation’s small group student training program is a six-week commitment that offers the benefit of working with a small group (3-5) of your peers with the expertise and attention of working with a certified personal trainer for 2 sessions each week. This is a student only program. There are beginner, immediate and advanced level classes. A description of each can be found below. Each class group will include a pre- and post-fitness assessment.

To sign-up for the small group training program, please complete the registration form below. The program is free, but participants must agree to a $50.00 deposit charge, which will only be processed to participants’ student account if the participant miss three or more sessions.


Beginners Class Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 – 9:00 pm:

This will be a beginner’s resistance training class taught by Jonathan Cox, CPT Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 – 9:00 pm. The purpose of this class is to establish a basic understanding for strength development, as well as learning basic form and techniques to safely lift heavier loads while weight training. This class will be an easy going, non-competitive atmosphere solely for the purpose of education. This class is best for those that are looking to build strength in a non-stressful environment or those that just want to learn how to use the free weights.  

Beginner Class Monday and Wednesday 8:00 – 9:00 pm:

This is a beginner’s small group fitness class taught by Sarah Sprague, CPT. The program focuses on educating members of the fundamentals of exercise in order to promote a healthy life style. This group will learn the proper pathways of understanding techniques and forms of exercise modes for both resistance and cardio training. Members of this group will also be encouraged on healthy lifestyle habits required for meeting fitness goals for overall health. This group is geared for anyone who wishes to engage in a healthy lifestyle, has a hard time with fitness commitment or just needs a helping hand to get started. 

Intermediate Fitness Tuesday and Thursday 7:00 – 8:00 pm:

The intermediate group fitness class taught by Luke Stubbs, CPT on Tuesdays/Thursdays at 7 P.M. This class is for those who have some previous experience with resistance training, but are not comfortable enough to train on their own.  It is also for those who need help learning how to structure a resistance-training workout.  The class will demonstrate different strategies for resistance training, as well as how to perform exercises properly.  You will discover how to use resistance training to your full potential, and gain the knowledge to train well on your own.  The class will have a fun atmosphere for the whole group, while encouraging participants to push themselves.
