Teams Initiative

What is the Teams Initiative?

The Teams Initiative is part of the Premier Student Work Experience Program. Our mission is to support and encourage high performance teamwork throughout the student work experience at Berry College. Much of our work is inspired by Mark Miller’s The Secret of Teams.

What is a team?

A team is defined as a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. A team may be part of a single department or program at Berry, or they may represent cross-campus teamwork.

Characteristics of a High Performance Team

According to Mark Miller’s research, the key characteristics of a high performance team are leadership, talent, skills and community. Regardless of industry or the service/product offered, work teams that have these characteristics will achieve high performance teamwork.

Consulting Meetings

Our Teams Initiative consultants partner individually with student work teams across campus to help them assess their team work, using a “High Performance Team” assessment (inspired by Mark Miller’s The Secret of Teams). Over a series of meetings, we learn about the team and its contributions to Berry, identify strengths and opportunities to share with the team leaders, and offer encouragement based on best practices from other teams.

Team of the Month Celebrations

Each month during the academic year, the Teams Initiative recognizes a student work team for contributing positively to Berry though high performance teamwork. We host a reception in their honor to celebrate their achievements. The team receives a certificate, and we also announce their selection on a bulletin board in Krannert Student Center. Supervisors may nominate their team for Team of the Month consideration by contacting the Teams Initiative.

Team of the Year Award

The Teams Initiative also awards “Team of the Year” to a top-performing student work team each year. We accept nominations for Team of the Year in the spring and work with a broad committee of campus representatives to identify the Team of the Year. The team is recognized with a certificate during the annual Student Work Awards, plus we host a special reception to celebrate them. They are also honored on a perpetual plaque in the Dean of Student Work’s office.
