Academy of American Poets
Financed by Joseph Corson Llewellyn and Emma Piatt Llewellyn, this award is given by the Department of English for the best poem or group of poems written by a Berry student.

American Chemical Society
The American Chemical Society Award is presented by the Analytical Division of the American Chemical Society and is given to a student who shows promise and interest in analytical chemistry.

Gordon Barber Memorial in Poetry
The Gordon Barber Memorial Award in Poetry was endowed by Mrs. William A. Barber in memory of her son. The award is presented to the students submitting the best original poems.

Barton Mathematics
The Barton Mathematics Award was established in 1998 in memory of Rayford Barton by his sons Henry Barton (71C) and Ray Barton (77C) and his grandson Bruce Barton (95C), all Berry College math majors. It is awarded to the senior math major showing the greatest achievement in mathematics.

Martha Berry Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Award
This award recognizes an outstanding undergraduate in the senior class who has completed at least 60 hours at Berry and whose individual achievement fulfills Berry’s mission of intellectual, moral and spiritual growth; while devoting their learning to community and civic betterment. The student must have at least a 3.2 GPA, an exemplary record as a student worker either on or off campus, and active involvement in volunteer services/religion-in-life service opportunities.

Martha Anderson Biggers Drama
The Martha Anderson Biggers Award was established by Dan Biggers in honor of his mother. The award is presented to the student who has made the greatest contribution to life at Berry College by using his or her talents in the field of drama.

Outstanding Student in Biology
This award is presented by the faculty of the Department of Biology to an outstanding student in Biology, based on academic achievement, service to the department, and scholarly accomplishments.

Campbell School of Business Outstanding Student
This award is presented by the business faculty to a graduating senior majoring in business or economics. It is awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and service to the Berry community.

Mary S. and Samuel Poe Carden Award
This annual award recognizes and encourages the highest standards of teaching, scholarship, helpfulness to students, and other contributions to the college community.

Gordon Carper
This award was established in honor of Dr. N. Gordon Carper by his family. The award recognizes the senior history major with the best academic record in American history.

Noel and Todd Carper
This award was established by Dr. and Mrs. N. Gordon Carper in honor of their sons, Noel and Todd, who graduated from Berry College in 1985 and 1987 respectively. The award recognizes the junior history major with the best academic record in history.

Thomas W. Carver SGA Outstanding Representative
The Student Government association presents this award to the representative who provides outstanding service.

Judson C. Clements
This award is endowed by Miss Mary Park Clements in memory of her father. This award recognizes a student for an act of bravery or for demonstrating exemplary courage in a particular situation or in the face of circumstances that normally would have produced serious discouragement.

Robert E. Coleman
The Textile Veterans Association Hospitalized Veterans Fund, Inc. established this award at Berry College in honor of Robert E. Coleman, former Chairman of the Board of Riegel Textile Corporation. It is awarded to an outstanding all-around student.

Delta Kappa Gamma
Presented by the Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, this award is given to a senior woman who is majoring in education and lives in the Rome area. Academic advisers nominate students for this award based on a student’s superior scholarship. The recipient must plan to teach in the Rome area.

Garland M. Dickey
This award and scholarship was established in 1982 by family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Garland Dickey, longtime athletic director and head of the Physical Education Department. Accompanied by an engraved medallion, it is presented to a student majoring in physical education; participating in the intramural or the intercollegiate athletic program; demonstrating scholarship and personifying the positive attitude, sense of service and indomitable spirit of Garland Dickey.

The DuBose Award
The DuBose Award honors excellence in a senior pre-medical student who embodies the integrated education of the head, heart, and hands. The Award is named for Dr. Bolling Stovall DuBose, MD.

The Distinguished Family Scholar Award
The award is given to a graduating senior who has demonstrated high standards of scholarship that is dedicated to improving the lives of children and families.

First-Year Advocate Award
This award recognizes Berry students, faculty, and staff members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help new students adjust to college life.

First-Year Writing Award
The First Year Writing award is given to the student submitting the essay from RHW 102 that best illustrates excellence in fulfilling the course goals. The essays are judged by members of the English, Rhetoric and Writing Department.

Dr. Gordon L. Foy
The Dr. Gordon L. Foy Award is endowed by Mrs. Foy in honor of her husband. This award recognizes young women majoring in business administration and excelling in scholarship and leadership.

Freshman Chemistry
The Freshman Chemistry Award is presented by CRC Press and is given to the outstanding student completing the freshman chemistry sequence.

Dave and Lu Garrett Award for Meritorious Teaching
This award is based solely upon the nominations from Berry students. The primary emphasis of the award is upon the following aspects of teaching: The inspiration of students towards an enthusiastic interest in an academic discipline and in learning in general; evidence of professional competence in the teacher’s field; and interest in the academic and personal welfare of students both within and without the classroom.

Eleana M. Garrett Award for Meritorious Advising and Caring
This award is presented to a faculty member who is “an exceptional and caring advisor, shows concern for advisees’ career goals and future goals, is willing to seek answers to advisees’ questions, is knowledgeable about college regulations and curricula, and is effective in directing students toward productive college experiences.”

Robert L. Geisel
The Robert L. Geisel Award was established in honor of Robert L. Geisel, Berry College retired professor of sociology, and is presented to graduating sociology and anthropology majors who have excelled in practicing their discipline inside the classroom and beyond.

Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants
This award from the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants is presented to the graduating student demonstrating the best performance in accounting.

Georgia State Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Student Teaching Award for Community Service
The Georgia State Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Student Teaching Award for Community Service honors an undergraduate student teacher who routinely goes above and beyond the average expectations in his/her work in the college classroom, the P-12 classroom and serves the community. The recipient of this award must exemplify the Berry motto, “Not to be ministered unto, but to minister.” The award will be given annually to a student teacher in the Berry College Charter School of Education and Human Sciences program who, through their service to others, best exemplifies the DAR ideals of patriotism, preservation of American history, and education for all.

Green Fitness
The Green Prize in Fitness was long awarded by Dr. G. Leland Green, former president of Berry College. The award now continues in that tradition set by Dr. Green and is given to the student showing the greatest improvement in fitness.

Hammond Poetry
This award is in memory of Mrs. Emily Vanderbilt Hammond, longtime donor and friend of Martha Berry, who started the poetry contest and personally made the awards during her many visits to Berry. The award is now made by the Daughters of Berry to honor the memory of Mrs. Hammond.

Heneisen Servant Leadership Award
This is awarded to a Bonner Scholar who exemplifies the characteristics of servant leadership. Servant leadership is a lifelong journey that includes discovery of one’s self, a desire to serve others, and a commitment to lead. A servant leader should possess the following characteristics in his/her interactions in both local and campus community: Trustworthy, Self-Aware, Humble, Caring, Visionary, Empowering, Relational, Competent, Good Steward and Community Builder.

History Faculty Award
This award was established by the faculty members in the department of history in 2010. The award recognizes an outstanding graduating history major, who has demonstrated through their academic work and their service to the department, their commitment and love of the discipline.

Ruby Hopkins Outstanding Student Teacher Award
The Ruby Hopkins Outstanding Student Teacher Award is given annually to a senior education major/minor who exemplifies the mission of the Charter School of Education to be a “developer of human potential” and for outstanding performance in the classroom during student teaching.

Kappa Delta Pi Endowed Award
This award is given to a senior or graduate student who is an active member of the Rho Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi.

Dr. Charles Scott Markle Award
The scholarship, founded by Merle Wade Matthews (49C), is awarded to a Berry college senior who has been accepted to medical school, and whose character and aspirations emulate Dr. Charles Markle (92C), a highly competent and compassionate physician, an understanding listener whose concern and dedication to the care of individual patients is truly exceptional.

Doyle Mathis
This award is established in honor of Doyle Mathis, retired provost and professor of government, and is presented to the outstanding junior students in government.

Lawrence E. McAllister Physics
The McAllister Physics Award honors a student who is judged by the Physics Department faculty to have done excellent work in physics. It is named for Dr. Lawrence McAllister, who started the department in 1932, was head until 1967 and retired in 1971.

Mew Fellowship Award in Art
The Mew Fellowship Award in Art recognizes a student whose paintings change the way people think and feel about art.

Wilson Mixon, Jr. Outstanding Senior in Economics
This award is given to the outstanding student majoring or minoring in economics and graduating in the current academic year.

Model UN
This award recognizes the student who contributed most to the success of Berry’s Model UN program over the last year.

Eleanor B. North Award in Creative Writing
The Eleanor B. North Award in Creative Writing was established by Miss North in April of 1972. Miss North taught literature at Berry College from 1951 to 1963. The award is presented to a student showing the most promise in creative writing.

Nurse Scholar Award
The Nurse Scholar award goes to a senior nursing major with the top local Berry GPA.

Senior Clinical Nurse Excellence Award
The Senior Nurse Leadership Award is a faculty elected award given to the senior nursing student who demonstrates superior leadership and clinical excellence. This student exhibits a positive attitude in the clinical setting, has an excellent bedside manner, acts as a patient advocate, and is a leader among their nursing peers.

Senior Leadership Award in Nursing
The Senior Leadership Award is a faculty elected award given to the senior student who has a servant’s heart and demonstrates campus and community leadership.

Olde Leafe Award
Annual award for the best writing (any genre, any discipline) by a Berry student on a pre-modern or early-modern (i.e., pre-1700) topic.

Order of St. Andrew
The Order of St. Andrew recognizes ethical leadership in the areas of scholarship and service. Specifically, the person inducted is someone who has demonstrated a creative imagination that leads to change, even transformation; an unwavering commitment to do good and to give more; and scholarship that provides a model for others. The inductee must have demonstrated a significant contribution to the Honors Program student life through service to, and participation in, the program.

Outstanding Junior Environmental Science Student
This award is presented by the Environmental Science faculty committee, to a junior majoring in Environmental Science. It is awarded, based on academic record, scholarly achievement, and service to the Environmental Science Program or community, to a student who shows great promise for environmental leadership during his/her senior year at Berry College.

Outstanding Senior Environmental Science Student
This award is presented by the Environmental Science faculty committee, to a graduating senior majoring in Environmental Science. It is awarded to a student who has excelled in academics and scholarly achievement, provided service to the Environmental Science Program or community, and who shows great promise as a future environmental professional.

Vernon Peakes
The Peakes Award is made possible by alumni contributions and is given to an outstanding student in organic chemistry.

William Pence Award in International Studies
This award is established in honor of William Pence, a graduate of the Government and International Studies Department, and is presented to the outstanding student in international studies.

Pendley English Teaching
The Pendley English Teaching Award is given annually in the field of language arts, on the basis of the student teaching experience, to a student who demonstrates great potential as a teacher.

Walter Oliver Pendley, M.D.
This award is given in honor of Walter O. Pendley, M.D., one of the first nine Berry students to become an M.D. The award goes to a rising senior who shows outstanding promise in premedical or preparamedical studies.

Charles E. Peterson
This award was established in honor of Dr. Charles E. Peterson, former associate dean at Berry College who helped foster the development of the communication major here. The award is presented annually to a communication major who exemplifies academic excellence and who demonstrates leadership and achievement in multiple areas of communication performance, including publications, speech and broadcasting.

Religion and Philosophy Outstanding Student
This award is presented by the faculty of the Department of Religion and Philosophy to the top student in Religion and Philosophy based on achievement within and service to the department.

Willis N. Pirkle
The Pirkle Award is made possible by alumni contributions and is given to an outstanding student in physical chemistry.

Robbie Powell Memorial
This award was established by the Class of 1975 in memory of a classmate who was killed in an accident on his way to classes at Berry. The award goes to a graduating senior who exhibits outstanding citizenship, service to others and “Berry friendliness.”

Amber T. Prince Outstanding Education Graduate Student Award
In honor of long-time faculty member, Dr. Amber T. Prince, who instilled the love of reading and the promotion of literacy in generations of pre-service and in-service teachers. This award is presented to a graduate education student who exemplifies the power of literacy and learning that Dr. Prince embodied. This award seeks to carry on the tradition of Dr. Prince: passionate teacher, intent listener and student advocate.

Rome Music Lovers Club
The Rome Music Lovers Club Award is an award established by The Music Lovers Club of Rome. It is awarded to a Berry College music student who has contributed much to the enrichment of the musical life of the college and the community.

Student Government Association Faculty and Staff Member of the Year
Students participate in an annual SGA vote to determine one faculty and one staff member who have best exemplified Berry’s mission and service to students.

The Shatto Leadership and Service Award
This award recognizes Berry College students, faculty, and staff for their outstanding commitments to volunteer and community service. The award is presented to a small number who exhibit leadership in living out Berry’s motto, “Not to be ministered unto, but to minister.” Candidates are chosen based on their involvement in community service and volunteer opportunities and if they have demonstrated leadership in service by encouraging peers and/or colleagues to become involved as well. These nominations are solicited from the Berry community as well as community service organizations in the Rome/Floyd County area.

John A. Sibley
The John A. Sibley Award is given each year to a student who exhibits scholarship, industry, character, citizenship, thrift and health.

Ranjit and Anjani Singh Award for Christian Ministry
Established by Dr. Chaitram Singh, the Ranjit and Anjani Singh Award for Christian Ministry is awarded to a rising senior, majoring in Religion and committed to full-time Christian ministry and service, inclusive of non-ecclesial vocations.

D. Sockwell Prize
The Sockwell Prize is awarded to the student who, in the opinion of the economics faculty (or outside readers requested by them), has written the best economics paper in the preceding calendar year.

Maria Strickland Equestrian Award
This award will be given annually to a female Animal Science major working at the Gunby Equine Center who, through her positive attitude, enduring strength, love of life, and service to others, best exemplifies the wonderful spirit of Maria Strickland.

The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation Award
The Mary Mildred Sullivan Foundation Award
The Algernon Sydney Sullivan and Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards were created nearly 100 years ago to honor the husband and wife for whom the awards are named. To honor their lives of service to others, the awards are given annually by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation to recognize individuals whose “nobility of character” and dedication to service sets them apart as examples for others. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan award will be awarded to a male student. The Mary Mildred Sullivan award will be awarded to a female student.

Eleanor Tinker and Ruth L. Baird
The Eleanor Waller Tinker and the Ruth L. Baird Awards recognize those students excelling in the arts in such areas as sculpture, painting, drawing, ceramics and weaving.

Troy/Gardner Endowed Award in Art History
This award was established in memory and honor of art supporters Saul and Shirley Troy and Gerald and Ruth Gardner. It is awarded to a promising art historian.

Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award
This award recognizes “The fundamental importance of the quality of teaching to the value of the higher education process.” The award is presented to a faculty member who has made a distinct difference in the teaching climate of the college. All Berry faculty are eligible for consideration for the award.

G.D. Wilson
This award was established in honor of G.D. Wilson, a retired member of the social science faculty. It is presented to graduating seniors demonstrating the best performance in government.

Alice Wingo Essay
The Alice Wingo Essay Award is given in memory of Miss Wingo, who for many years was Dean of Women at Berry College. The award goes to the student who writes the best essay in a literature course.

Writing Across the Curriculum
This is awarded to a student and a faculty member. The student must show depth of understanding, creativity, engagement and organization; the faculty must show engagement, contribution to student learning, originality, and reflections; WI courses, teaching and learning.
